Matt Hunter single-handedly saved America in 1985’s Invasion U.S.A. and now he’s back—kind of—in Avenging Force. Depending on where you live this could also be American Ninja 2. Confused? We made a chart.
Avenging Force is a hilarious, so-bad-it’s-good action movie brought to us by the infallible Cannon Films Group. Michael Dudikoff takes over for Chuck Norris in the role of former secret service agent Matt Hunter, with hilarious results. The promise of the VHS cover pull quote, “Michael Dudikoff’s style is reminiscent of a young Clint Eastwood,” comes back to bite him multiple times throughout the movie but we love him anyway. So what’s his mission? Last time he saved the country, now is he gonna save the world? Not really, but he is gonna act as a bodyguard for his friend and senate candidate, Larry Richards, played by—who else—but the always amazing Steve James! They must’ve been a package deal in those days. Our villains—a group of guys dressed like they’re in a bad 90’s rap-metal band—are known as Pentangle (which could also be the name of a bad 90’s rap-metal band) and their master plan is to ensure their city doesn’t elect a black senator. They also like to hunt people for sport but really, the story hinges pretty heavily on them being super racist and not wanting Richards to get the job. We’re sure their evil organization must have had grander or just other plans, but if they did they snuck by us. But let’s be honest, you’re not watching this movie for the well thought out plot. You wanna see a guy with a kid in his arms fall off a roof. We’re not gonna lie, that scene played a big role in our checking this movie out for the first time. So go ahead, we won’t judge you, the scene is amazing.
