My Science Project (1985)
Back of the box. . .
“Michael Harlan (John Stockwell) has procrastinated on his science project until the last minute, and his teacher (Dennis Hopper) issues him an ultimatum: turn in a science project or flunk. So Mike scavenges a military base’s junk pile for a suitable gizmo to pass off as his project. He finds one. . . and unwittingly unleashes the awesome power and energy of the unknown. Twisted dimensions. Time warps. A fantastic realm where the past, present and future collide in a whirling vortex that takes the class on a startling adventure back in time and into the future.”

My Science Project was recommended to us by Cyrus from Kale Brigade and having never heard of it before, we were really excited to find a quality copy of it on YouTube. Blown away is probably the best way to describe our initial reaction, we couldn’t believe a movie like this had sneaked by our radar. My Science Project is a sci-fi, adventure, comedy starring John Stockwell, from Christine and Top Gun, and Fisher Stevens, who you may recognize from Short Circuit, Mystery Date and Hackers. Stevens steals the show as Vince Latello, high school tough guy from the bronx and one of the most likable dirtbags ever put on film. He wears his sunglasses at night because, in his own words, “when you’re cool, the sun shine on you 24 hours a day.” Dennis Hopper plays a science teacher and—who would have guessed it—he’s a stoner, anti-establishment, hippie. From a T-Rex in the school gym to a gang of post-apocalyptic mutants in the hall, My Science Project has surprisingly good visual effects and is a definite must see for any fan of the 80’s.
